Spring Hill man injured Wednesday when his semi drives off I-75, hits tree

A 53-year-old Spring Hill man was injured after his semitrailer slammed into a tree and overturned Wednesday afternoon outside Gainesville.

At about 4:10 p.m., Stephen Samuel Maxfield was northbound on Interstate 75 at Mile Marker 391 when his 2014 International semi, pulling a 53-foot trailer, drove off the road onto the grass shoulder, according to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report.

The truck slammed into a tree and overturned onto its left side. Maxfield was wearing his seat belt. No one else was injured.

Paramedics took Maxfield to UF Health Shands Hospital. Doctors there treated him for serious injuries, the report stated.

Troopers didn’t say how the truck drove off the road. however they charged Maxfield with careless driving.
