A 33-year-old Live Oak man was critically injured Thursday night when he entered the traffic lanes of U.S. 129 in Suwannee County and was hit by a car, said the Florida Highway Patrol.

Daniel P. Fitzgerald was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital late Thursday in critical condition, troopers said, after being struck at around 10:25 p.m. north of the intersection of U.S. 129 and 133rd Drive, which is located south of Live Oak.

According to FHP, Fitzgerald was standing on the east paved apron of U.S. 129 as a northbound 2004 Chevy Cavalier being driven by Robert J. Eaken, 69, of Live Oak, approached.

Troopers said Fitzgerald then entered the travel lanes in front of the Chevy and was struck in the northbound lane. Eaken made a U turn and returned to the crash scene. Neither Eaken nor a passenger in his Chevy was injured, troopers said.

FHP said charges are pending further investigation.
