TAMPA — The Florida softball team swept a pair of games against Wisconsin and Bethune-Cookman on Sunday to complete a perfect six-game trip to Tampa for the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament.
Junior Lauren Haeger threw a no-hitter in the Gators' 5-1 victory over the Badgers in the first game, marking her first career solo no-hitter. UF then mercy-ruled Bethune-Cookman 8-0 (5 innings) in the second contest.
Haeger tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts and faced 26 batters in the contest, five over the minimum.
Offensively, Bailey Castro opened the scoring for Florida with an RBI single in the third inning. Kelsey Stewart added a two-run home run, her first of the season, in the fourth. In the fifth, a run-scoring double by Taylor Schwarz and an RBI single by Aubree Munro completed the Gators' offensive production for the game.
In the tournament finale against Bethune-Cookman, UF erupted in the second inning, scoring all eight of the game's runs.
After Castro walked and advanced to second on a groundout, Stephanie Tofft blasted her first home run of the 2014 campaign to put Florida ahead 2-0. Chiefland graduate Taylore Fuller followed with a walk and a stolen base, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Justine McLean drew a free pass and stole second to set the table for Stewart who cleared the bases with a single and advanced to second on the throw. A Kirsti Merritt walk preceded Haeger's RBI single that plated Stewart, followed by Castro's second RBI single.
Freshman Delanie Gourley cruised through four innings of one-hit ball, allowing one walk and striking out five. Junior Alyssa Bache pitched the final inning, retiring the first two batters on bunts before walking a batter who subsequently was caught stealing to end the game.
Women's tennis: At Charlottesville, Va., the second-ranked Gators captured a 4-1 win against No. 6 Southern California at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Freshman Kourtney Keegan and sophomore Brianna Morgan each picked up wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
Senior Olivia Janowicz followed with a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 decision against No. 13 Sabrina Santamaria, before senior Alexandra Cercone provided the clinching victory, a 7-5, 6-1 win over Zoe Scandalis.
Women's golf: At Palos Verdes, Calif., matching her season-low 18 holes, junior Camilla Hedberg made an impressive five birdies to finish even-par (71), her same score as round one of the 2013 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
Junior Sarah Schober (competing as an individual) and freshman Maria Torres followed Hedberg with top-20 individual finishes on the day, shooting just one-over (72) and rolling off three birdies apiece.
Carding a solid 76 (plus-5), redshirt sophomore Katie Mitchell penciled in just one double bogey at Palos Verdes as freshman Karolina Vlckova and senior Elcin Ulu rounded out the Gators' five, shooting rounds of 79 (plus-8) and 82 (plus-11), respectively.
