Police arrested a Gainesville man Tuesday night after they said he punched a man until he was unconscious and later fought a security guard.
Javon Myhand, 21, of 2306 SE 45th Terrace, and a relative of his had walked to the Village Crossing Apartments on Southeast 18th Street to find Myhand's mother. The Gainesville Police Department said the two believed Myhand's mother was romantically involved with a man who rented an apartment at the complex, the report said.
When Myhand and his relative knocked on the apartment door, a man opened the door, and behind him was Myhand's mother, police said. Myhand then punched the victim in the forehead, knocking him unconscious for about three minutes, the report said.
Police said Myhand then fled the scene on foot. An armed security guard who was at the apartment complex's office during this time began pursuing Myhand after he was told there had been a fight and that a man was unconscious, the report said.
The security guard said he finally found Myhand hiding in the shadows and, after a chase, grabbed him. Myhand used his left hand to grab the security guard's holstered handgun from his hip, so the guard wrapped his arms around Myhand and threw him to the ground with the gun underneath Myhand, the report said.
After police intervened in the fight, they said Myhand ignored commands, resisted officers and later was apprehended by a K-9, the report said.
Myhand was charged with burglary, battery, resisting an officer and larceny. He also was arrested on two warrants for driving with a suspended license and theft, according to the police report.
He was being held Wednesday at the Alachua County jail with no bail set.
