A Gainesville man died and two others were seriously injured in a fiery crash late Friday night when the driver veered off the road, over-corrected and struck a tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The pickup truck caught fire and the three people in it were pulled out by passers-by, according to an FHP press release.

Dead is the driver, Gregory Allan Higgins, 42. Taken to UF Health Shands Hospital was his wife, Raeann Higgins, 42, and passenger John F. McDaniels, 47, of Burwell, Neb.

The accident occurred about 11:40 p.m. on Alachua County Road 241 and Southwest 50th Avenue. Higgins was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram north on CR 241 just east of Archer, the report states.

For unknown reasons, the pickup drifted onto the shoulder. Evidence indicates Higgins attempted to get back on the road but over-steered, causing the pickup to swerve. It crossed both lanes, rotated counter-clockwise, hit a tree and caught fire.

Higgins died at the scene.

FHP suspects alcohol was a factor in the crash, the report states.
