The Abercrombie & Fitch store in The Oaks Mall has closed.
In response to questions, the Ohio-based teen clothing retailer issued a written statement that said only that the company's long-term strategy is to close underperforming stores and to transfer remaining merchandise to other locations. The Gainesville store closed Jan. 24.
The company announced in 2012 that it planned to close 180 U.S. stores by 2015. It now operates 890 U.S. stores under the Abercrombie & Fitch, abercrombie kids, Hollister Co. and Gilly Hicks brands, along with another 166 stores in international markets.
The company has faced three straight quarterly sales declines and reported a third-quarter loss of $15.6 million. Same-store sales over the holidays were down 6 percent from 2012.
Gainesville sales associate Makesha Doe said employees were told the store was going to close about two weeks in advance. Doe estimated that the store had 50 to 60 mostly part-time employees and said they were not given a reason for the store's closing.
Angie McCann, general manager of The Oaks Mall, said another tenant that she can't yet reveal plans to move in.
"We are working on something that should go under construction fairly soon," McCann said.
