Police arrested a security guard Tuesday night after he was accused of stealing $40,000 worth of gas over the course of nine months.

Gainesville police said Cedric Wallace, 22, of 12 NE 47th Terrace, was working as a security guard at the Tacachale Center on Waldo Road when he obtained a gas key that allowed him to steal 10,000 gallons of fuel from the facility since April 2013, the police report said.

On Tuesday, Tacachale administrators saw Wallace make three separate trips to the gas pumps at 6:45 p.m. and fill four 5-gallon gas containers during each trip.

After he was arrested, Wallace reportedly told police he was using the gas to fill his vehicle, his friends’ vehicles and some of his coworkers’ vehicles. Wallace also said he was compensated on several occasions for providing his friends with the stolen gas, the report said.

Wallace was arrested on charges of grand theft, scheme to defraud and dealing in stolen property, according to the report.
