A University of Florida building was evacuated Tuesday morning after police said someone reported smelling gas in one of the chemistry labs.

At 10:27 a.m., people working in one of the labs at Leigh Hall noticed the smell of gas in the room, according to University Police public information officer Maj. Brad Barber.

The source of the smell was sulfur being used to detect leaks in pipes that were being worked on, authorities said.

The building was reopened within about 45 minutes, police said.
