A Gainesville woman was arrested by police Tuesday after they say she stole a glass pipe to smoke cocaine and hit a clerk with her car who tried to stop her.

Police said Jennifer Medina, 40, of 8332 SW 44th Terrace, entered Modern Age Tobacco and Gift Shop on University Avenue at 3:55 p.m. She asked a clerk for a glass pipe that she could use to smoke cocaine, the Gainesville Police Department said.

When the clerk refused the sale and left the counter, Medina reached over the counter, removed the glass pipe and left the business without payment. Another clerk notified the clerk who refused the sale, and they followed Medina to her car, the police report said.

As Medina was driving away, officers said, she hit one of the clerks with the side view mirror of her car, while the second clerk was able to jump out of the way of Medina’s car. Police said that as Medina fled from the business, she got into a traffic accident and continued to drive away without stopping and providing her information, the report said.

After she was arrested, Medina told police she had stolen the glass pipe, used it to smoke cocaine and then discarded it. She also said she did get into an accident while leaving the business but said she did not hit the clerk, the report said.

Medina was charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, aggravated battery and petty theft, according to the police report. She was being held Wednesday at the Alachua County jail in lieu of $71,000 bond.
