Former Gainesville Regional Utilities General Manager Bob Hunzinger has been hired by an electric cooperative in Illinois.
In November, the Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative Board of Directors hired Hunzinger as its president and chief executive officer. He is slated to begin there on Jan. 1, according to a press release from the organization. The co-op is based out of Paxton, Ill. and serves a rural area with about 12,000 members/customers.
Hunzinger resigned from GRU last month after about 5½ years. His tenure was marked by the utility's increased use of renewable energy sources and intense public debate over the biomass contract, which will push up electric rates that were already among the highest in the state.
The Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative press release on Hunzinger’s hiring noted his “deep rooted ties” in Illinois. He was born in Dieterich, Ill., and graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, the release stated. He worked 20 years in the utility industry in Illinois, working for Illinois Power and Soyland Power Cooperative, according to the release.
