A man wanted for a Marion County armed robbery shot himself in an apartment in Gainesville when officers came to take him into custody.

Miker Debose was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital in critical condition following the shooting, which occurred about 12:30 p.m. at Pinewood Apartments at 4400 NW 39th Ave., said Deputy U.S. Marshal Bryon Carroll.

Officers from several agencies that form the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force surrounded the apartment and noticed movement inside.

A short time later, a single gunshot occurred and a woman ran out the front door yelling that Debose shot himself. Debose then crawled out the apartment and was given first aid for a gunshot wound to his chest, Carroll said.

A gun was found inside the apartment, he added.

Debose, 42, was wanted for robbery with a firearm stemming from a Marion County incident early last month. Debose and a woman allegedly robbed a tow truck driver of his vehicle.

The woman, Tami Bynum, was arrested Nov. 15 in Putnam County.

Witnesses at Pinewood Apartments said they saw several law enforcement officers in protective gear roll up and surround the apartment.

“I was messing with my truck and I heard some trucks, looked up and saw people with rifles,” said resident Noah Borelli. “I went inside — I figured they would tell me to go in, so I thought I would save them the trouble.”

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.

Carroll said investigators had learned that Debose was no longer in Marion County and was changing locations to avoid arrest. They learned Tuesday morning that he was at Pinewood.

In addition to the Marion County warrant, Debose was also wanted on a federal warrant for violation of conditions of supervised release.

Debose had been released from a federal prison in June after serving a 210-month sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Carroll said.
