Newberry junior outside hitter Kelsey Harris was named the Class 1A Volleyball Player of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers on Wednesday, winning by 20 points over state champion Sneads’ standout senior Logan Neel.

Harris, who led the Panthers to their first state tournament, finished with 391 kills, 104 aces and 463 digs on the season. She had 21 kills, 24 digs and five aces in Newberry’s 3-2 regional final win at Williston.

A first-team all-area player as a sophomore, Harris led the Panthers to their first playoff berth in 30 years in 2012.

“I am really honored, kind of surprised when I saw it on Twitter,” said Harris, who will be celebrating her 16th birthday Sunday. “Being able to go to state was a big thing for little Newberry, we accomplished a lot and made history for our town. We definitely plan on leaving next year with a state title.”

Last year, Lafayette’s Lindsay O’Steen won the 1A award after leading the Hornets to their second straight state title.
