After a chase through Butler Plaza on Monday afternoon, police arrested two teens suspected of shoplifting from Kohl’s and beating an employee who tried to apprehend them.
After being stopped for suspected shoplifting, Brandon Lee Williams, 19, of Gainesville, and a 17-year-old boy from Archer fought staffers at Kohl’s, according to Gainesville Police spokesman Officer Ben Tobias.
A Kohl’s loss prevention officer chased the teens through Butler Plaza while police were on their way. The suspects stopped and beat the man in the parking lot of The Estates on 24th Avenue, but he was able to escape and flag down an officer who was responding, Tobias said.
At 2:02 p.m., police arrived and were told by witnesses that the suspects were running across Archer Road and behind Butler Plaza. A GPD K-9 unit tracked the suspects into the woods near Windmeadows Boulevard, Tobias said.
A witness alerted the Joint Aviation Unit helicopter and took them to the suspects’ location. The two emerged onto Windmeadows Boulevard where they were arrested by police at 2:32 p.m., he said.
Tobias added that the employee will likely need stitches for his head injury and that both suspects will likely face armed robbery charges.
