Coming off an 18-6-1 record and a runner-up finish in District 5-2A last year, the Santa Fe Raiders, led by senior forward Jordyn Register, wanted to show even more improvement coming into 2013.

Jordyn Register and the undefeated Santa Fe Raiders have outscored their opponents 69-2 while posting eight shutouts in nine games.

So far the Raiders are doing just that, off to a 9-0 start.

“They are playing extremely well right now,” said second-year Santa Fe coach Ken Murphy. “What is working right now is it is all about team, no individual stats. Everyone is trying to help each other, they all work well together. They are much more comfortable with each other.”

Register, along with sophomore forward Taylor Martin and junior defender Bianca Irizarry, were Sun first-team all-area performers last year. Register and Martin had 35 and 30 goals, respectively, in 2012 and Irizarry has only allowed five shots on goal all season.

The Raiders, who play host to Newberry on Tuesday at 5 p.m., have outscored their opponents 69-2, posting eight shutouts in nine games. They gave up two goals in a 9-2 win at P.K. Yonge.

“Jordyn has become a true team leader,” Murphy said. “As opposed to trying to force something, she looks to pass it. Against P.K. Yonge, she scored her 100th career goal, which was pretty cool.”

Coming up Friday is a district showdown match with Keystone Heights (6-3), led by The Sun's 2012 Player of the Year Maddie Colaw at forward. Last year the Indians edged the Raiders 5-4 to capture the District 5-2A title.

“That is definitely the game we are looking forward to,” Murphy said. “Keystone has a great deal of experience, even though they have a new coach (Kenny Seneca). They are still following a good winning formula.

“Our girls are working really hard. There is a lot more team bonding this season than I have had in the past.“
