A northeast Gainesville woman who answered a knock on her door was shot to death by someone who knew her late Saturday afternoon and a hunt for the shooter lasted into the evening without success, police reported.
The shooting occurred at Village Green Apartments at 3101 NE 15th St. The identities of the woman and the shooter, who residents said is a former boyfriend of hers, have not been released by police.
“She opened her door and was shot,” Gainesville Police Department Lt. Dan Stout said. “We know who the suspect is. They knew each other. We have quality leads.”
The woman died at the scene. Stout said she was taken to a hospital because of some information police had gotten that she might be pregnant. Stout said he didn’t know if she was pregnant.
Neighbors said they heard the shooting and saw a man leaving the area on foot. Police described him as 315 to 325 pounds. He wore black clothing and had a handgun, witnesses said.
The victim had just recently moved to Village Green, neighbors said, adding that they had not gotten to know her.
One resident, who did not want to give her name, said the shooter had dated her cousin and had threatened the cousin.
“I know him. He’s crazy,” she said after giving police information about the suspect.
The woman said the victim had been in a relationship with the shooter for a while and had children with him.
Stout said he does not believe that anyone else was in the apartment when the shooting occurred.
Anyone with information about the shooter should call 955-1818.
