When judging the college career of Florida senior forward Casey Prather, it's easy to get lost in the highlight-reel, alley-oop dunks.

But Prather has endured plenty of setbacks — including injuries and a turnover problem that limited his playing time in his first two years on campus.

“This experience has been so good to me,” Prather said. “It's taught me a lot about how to be a man, how to fight through adversity, how to persevere. I definitely take pride in that.”

Prather was looking to build off a strong showing in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. But preseason concussions and a sprained ankle in January forced him to miss eight games. Prather still ended up a productive scorer off the bench, averaging 6.2 points and 3.7 rebounds.

“The injuries hurt me because it just kind of pulled me back a little bit,” Prather said. “It was kind of hard. Not as much with the injuries as not knowing if I was going to get hurt again. It was kind of a scary situation to be in, but I still got to play so I feel I had another chance.”

Prather is at his best at power forward in smaller lineups, because his athletic ability often creates mismatches against slower, stronger power forwards, Florida coach Billy Donovan said. In those lineups, Prather showed he could still out-leap opposing big men for rebounds.

“He got off to a great start, was playing really well until he hurt his ankle, had some concussions, battled some injuries last year,” Donovan said. “I thought those things got in the way of him having a terrific year. I'm hoping he can stay healthy and I'm optimistic he can have a really good year for us.”
