When Walker was pressed into emergency duty as a freshman last February, his lack of physical strength was exposed during SEC play. Rebounds were ripped out of his hands. Big bodies muscled past him on box-out assignments.
“I heard about it every day,” Walker said. “I made sure it was a priority every day because last year, the small times I did get into games, sometimes I was physically dominated. I felt like I lacked it so every day I was in the weight room. I brought my weight up.”
Walker gained about 10 pounds of muscle over the summer. He nearly transferred from the program last spring due to lack of playing time, but was talked into returning.
Coach Billy Donovan had talked about possibly redshirting Walker this season, but Walker showed enough promise during preseason workouts to earn a spot in UF's rotation.
A former point guard at Winter Haven High, Walker has also worked on expanding his offensive game. Walker spent most of UF's second summer session in the gym working on his mid-range shooting game, Florida assistant coach Matt McCall said.
“My range has definitely extended,” Walker said. “I've been shooting every day. I feel very comfortable. More confident. Definitely more confident.”
