Man seen pushing wheelchair on I-95 dies

FORT LAUDERDALE — Authorities are investigating the death of man who had been pushing a wheelchair along Interstate 95 north of Fort Lauderdale.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, motorists began calling 911 after spotting the man Sunday morning. They say at some point the man, later identified as 55-year-old William Randolph Lockard, sat down in the wheelchair and died of an unknown medical condition.

FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky told The Miami Herald ( ) the man was not hit by a vehicle. He says Lockard may have been homeless.

The FHP is investigating since Lockard died on the interstate.
