Gainesville Police Department officers arrested a woman Monday night after they say she hit her husband with a garden hoe.
Ella Louise White, 52, of 1390 SE 23rd Ave., and her husband of 22 years were involved in an argument outside their home when White grabbed a hoe and swung it several times at her husband, a police report said.
Police said the victim received a small cut on his left wrist and disarmed White after several attempts to block her strikes. Once White was disarmed of the garden hoe, she went back inside her house, the report said.
The man said she came back out with a black-handled butcher’s knife and held it down at her side but did not confront him. He called police, and White went back inside the house, placed the knife in the sink and left, according to the report.
White told police she had grabbed the garden hoe and swung it at her husband, but that she was defending herself and did not try to harm him.
She also said she did not grab a knife, the report said.
White was charged with aggravated assault and simple battery, the report said. She was being held Tuesday in the Alachua County jail.
