A scooter driver was seriously injured Monday night when he was hit by a motorist on Newberry Road at 57th Street, Gainesville Police Department spokesman Ben Tobias reported.

Taken to UF Health Shands Hospital was Julian Larrauri, 22. An update on his condition was not available Tuesday afternoon from Shands.

The accident happened about 9:52 p.m. A preliminary investigation indicated that Daina D. Skinner, 30, was driving an SUV westbound on Newberry Road and turning left onto 57th Street while Larrauri was eastbound on Newberry Road.

Skinner turned into his path, Tobias reported. Larrauri was taken to Shands with a suspected broken femur and head injuries, Tobias said.

Larrauri's scooter had a flashlight duct-taped to the frame that might have been the only headlamp on the scooter. Additionally, Larrauri was wearing all black clothing, Tobias said.

Eastbound Newberry Road was closed for about two hours during the investigation.
