Florida sophomore running back Matt Jones is out for the season with a knee injury suffered at LSU, coach Will Muschamp announced today.
No. 22 Florida (4-2) at No. 14 Missouri (6-0), 12:21 p.m.
"I hate it for Matt,” Muschamp said at his weekly news conference on the UF campus. “He is a great young man. To have this setback is disheartening for all of us."
Jones is undergoing surgery today to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee, according to UF.
Redshirt junior Mack Brown and freshman Kelvin Taylor move up to one and two on depth chart, with sophomore Mark Herndon third, Muschamp said. Valdez Showers could get carries.
UF has suffered a rash of injuries since August, with seven players out for the season – five of them starters: receiver Andre DeBose (knee), offensive tackle Chaz Green (shoulder), QB Jeff Driskel (leg), defensive lineman Dominique Easley (knee) and Jones. Freshman linebacker Matt Rolin (knee) and freshman defensive back Nick Washington (shoulder) are also out.
"More than anything, I hate it for the young men," said Muschamp, who confirmed it's the worst year for injuries to one of his teams.
It has been an especially tough year for Jones, who missed time overcoming a viral infection. Jones finishes the season with 339 yards and two touchdowns in five games.
In other news, linebacker Ronald Powell has an ankle injury. Muschamp said he hopes to have Powell at practice Wednesday.
Also, punter Kyle Christy, a Ray Guy Award finalist last season, has been benched in favor of true freshman Johnny Townsend, Muschamp said.
"We've got to punt the ball better,'' Muschamp said.
