A shot with less than 90 seconds left in the final overtime gave the No. 19 South Carolina soccer team a 2-1 double overtime victory over No. 8 Florida in front of 1,511 fans Friday evening at the James G. Pressly Stadium.
Both of South Carolina’s goals came off headers.
The golden goal came at 108:36 when Taylor Leach headed in Chelsea Drennan’s corner kick to give USC its second overtime win in the all-time 25-match series between the teams.
The Gamecocks scored in the 37th minute when the lofted ball sent by Christine Watts from the top of the Gators’ defensive third was headed in by Bay Daniel from eight yards.
The Gators tied the match just before halftime.
With the opening half clock waning, Havana Solaun took the ball end line giving way to freshman Savannah Jordan who’s left foot placed it in the goal with just 31 seconds remaining in the half.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: At Pacific Palisades, Calif., Brianna Morgan won a pair of singles matches and advanced to the semifinals of the consolation draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
After Thursday’s tough opening-round loss to the top-seed, Morgan regrouped and earned impressive wins against UNLV’s No. 32-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 16 and first round of consolation action.
Morgan will play either Kentucky’s Nadia Ravita or TCU’s Stefanie Tan in the semifinals today.
