One of two people killed in a head-on collision on U.S. 19 in Levy County late last month was identified on Thursday as a 37-year-old Old Town woman.

Lawanda Lynn Mitchell was headed south in the northbound inside lane of the highway at around 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 25, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Just south of Northwest 153rd Lane, Mitchell’s 2002 Jeep Cherokee collided head-on with a northbound 2002 Toyota Camry driven by Taslim Alam, 27, of Trenton, the report said.

Mitchell’s car burst into flames, and both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday released Mitchell’s name.

Shiran Akther, 23, of Trenton, a passenger in Alam’s car, was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital in critical condition.
