Gainesville's bus service has hit new records for daily and annual ridership.

For the fiscal year running from Oct. 1, 2012 -Sept. 30 2013, the Gainesville Regional Transit System had 10.87 million passenger rides, breaking the record from the prior year.

As the University of Florida and Santa Fe College began their fall semesters, RTS set a new daily record with 65,667 passenger rides on Aug. 26.

The recently ended fiscal year also brought a new monthly ridership record. Back in October 2012, RTS had almost 1.39 million passenger rides, breaking the previous record set in October 2011.

Propelled by UF and Santa Fe students, who make up some three-quarters of the passengers, Gainesville's bus system has the highest ridership in the state compared to the city's population, according to an RTS press release.
