A semi-trailer struck the pedestrian bridge near Southwest 13th Street and Archer Road late Sunday while being towed, Gainesville police reported.

Some traffic on 13th Street had to be temporarily shut down. Officials from the state Department of Transportation checked for damage but deemed the bridge safe.

The trailer had been involved in a previous, unrelated accident and was being towed. The driver of the northbound tow truck misjudged the bridge height and the trailer struck the bottom of the bridge, knocking the trailer off the towing platform, police said.

The bridge reopened in November after a major renovation project. Replacing the old fencing is a new “double helix” aluminum enclosure.
