Pac-12 referees kind to The Picks

Finally, the truth can be told about why the Pac-12 officials botched the end of the Arizona State-Wisconsin game. Turns out they are big fans of The Picks and knew I had picked Arizona State to win.

Other than that, there is no explanation for what happened at the end of that game.

But this column isn't supposed to be about the past, but the future. Unfortunately, the games that took place last week are a lot more interesting than the ones this weekend, and we already know last week's scores.

It has been an every-other-week for college football this season. An example of how bad it is — Miami is a 60-point favorite over Savannah State. And if I was going to Vegas, I'd give the points. Savannah State lost its first two games by a combined 143-12 against Georgia Southern and Troy.

The good news is that Savannah State won last week over Fort Valley State, which then announced it was giving up football.

The 60-point spread is the second biggest ever. The biggest came last year when Florida State was a 65-point favorite over …. wait for it … Savannah State. And you're complaining about Toledo.

The Picks went 8-2 last week, which is pretty good but could have been better if I had the guts to pick Ole Miss and UCF. Of course, you're talking to a guy who benched his No. 1 pick in Fantasy Football in the second week of the season.

That's 23-7 for the year and 0-1-1 in fantasy.

Tennessee at Florida: Remember when Gator fans used to sing, “Rocky Top, you'll always be … second in the SEC.” What a Tennessee fan wouldn't do to finish second in the SEC these days. Florida, 31-19.

Auburn at LSU: I've always wondered what an Auburn fan says when he or she passes an LSU fan in the parking lot before a game. “Go Tigers?” It just doesn't work. LSU, 34-14.

Michigan State at Notre Dame: Did you see Lou Holtz get aggressively indignant with his cohorts on ESPN when they were questioning whether Mack Brown should be fired? Was that real or was he forced to do that by ESPN? This has nothing to do with Notre Dame except that he openly roots for his old team on the air. Notre Dame, 24-21.

Arizona State at Stanford: Now this is a big game. So big that the reprimanded Pac-12 officials have to watch reruns of the “Today” show's fourth hour instead of this. Stanford, 24-14.

Arkansas at Rutgers: This is how fast football season can fly by — doesn't it seem like a long time ago that Rutgers lost to Fresno State in overtime? Rutgers, 34-27.

Kansas State at Texas: I don't know what the big deal is about Texas having a bad defense. I thought it was a rule that every Big 12 team has to have a bad defense. Texas, 38-31.

Troy at Mississippi State: Dan Mullen needs this one. I never thought I'd be writing that about a game between an SEC team and Troy. Mississippi State, 34-21.

Utah at BYU: They tell me this is a big deal. And on a terrible week, it makes The Picks. BYU, 28-21.

Missouri at Indiana: Is there a more under-the-radar unbeaten than Mizzou? Missouri, 27-18.

Boise State at Fresno State: Friday night game and a big one in the MWC. Fresno, 45-42.
