A Crystal River man was hospitalized with serious injuries Wednesday morning when his pickup truck flipped onto its roof on Northwest 23rd Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Thomas J. Smith, 63, was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital after he lost control of the pickup and collided with a tree, FHP reported in a press release.

The accident occurred about 11:45 a.m. as Smith was eastbound in the 7500 block of 23rd Avenue. He drove off the road, lost control and collided with a tree. The pickup overturned and ended up on its roof.

FHP reported that the eastbound lane was closed for about 30 minutes.
