The Picks head into a weak second week

I have identified that smell that has been bothering you all week. It’s not on the bottom of your shoe and, as far as I can tell, no paper mills have moved here from Palatka.

What you are smelling is the stink of the second week of the college football season.

The first week was so much fun. If this week were a movie sequel, it would be sandwiched between “More American Graffiti” and “Smokey and The Bandit II” on a list of worst sequels ever.

There are three really good games and you know there will be some game where you can’t believe the result. But there is no way to salvage this week.

I know that it tends to be this way in the second week. But when you are making The Picks and you need 10 games and you write down “Western Kentucky at Tennessee” as your fourth best game, well, that’s just sad.

Anyway, it was a strong opener for The Picks with an 8-2 mark. I’m shooting for perfection this week.

Florida at Miami: The last time Florida played at Miami it was one of the classic meltdowns ever. I’m not talking about Florida blowing a 33-10 lead. I’m talking about the reaction from the sportswriter parked next to me in press parking when he got back to his vehicle after the game only to discover it had been stolen. Which is why I have a rule — always rent when entering Dade County. I think Florida’s defense gives it a slight edge. Florida, 24-21.

South Carolina at Georgia: The Doggies let me down last week. I gave way too much credit to a defense that we should have seen coming. Still, I think they will bounce back at home. Georgia, 28-21.

Notre Dame at Michigan: Notre Dame and Michigan aren’t rivals, according to Brian Kelly. Yo, Bri-dog, I’ve got news for you. Every team in America is your rival. It comes with the job. Michigan, 27-17.

Western Kentucky at Tennessee: Butch Jones wants the student section at Neyland Stadium to be given a name. You think I’m going to swing at that softball? Too easy. Volun-tears, 34-24.

Texas at BYU: Longhorn players practiced with elevation masks to prepare themselves for the altitude in Provo. That’s different than the paper bags Texas fans have worn the last couple of years. Texas, 31-23.

Miami (Ohio) at Kentucky: Kentucky has a new coach who has everyone excited. In their opener, the Wildcats were overpowered up front by Western Kentucky, which rushed for 215 yards and four touchdowns. New coach, same players. Marky Mark Stoops needs this one. Kentucky, 21-14.

Arkansas State at Auburn: Gus Malzahn used Arky State as a rest stop for a year until he could get a real job. Arky State is a pretty good team. We still aren’t sure about the Fighting Malzahns. Just do it, Dr. Football. Arkansas State, 34-31.

Oregon at Virginia: Oregon is breaking out new uniforms for this game. The backs of the jerseys all have hands waving goodbye. Oregon, 54-21.

Toledo at Missouri: Toledo was less than impressive last week. How much of that was Florida? That’s what Mizzou wants to know. Missouri, 20-14.

UAB at LSU: The Blazers can throw it around, and you have to think this could be a trap game for the Tigers. Oh, who am I kidding? LSU, 34-10.
