It is rare to find a young professional man volunteer his time and talents to the arts. Shontae is that man. Shontae, originally from Pittsburgh and a graduate of Temple University, moved to Gainesville several years ago to work as Assistant Director of Student Activities and Involvement at the University of Florida. With a love and a passion for theater, he knew wherever he lived he wanted to be a blessing to a cultural organization. Immediately upon his arrival he contacted several arts organizations to lend his support and expereience. For many years, the Actors' Warehouse and the Star Center have been a recipients of his experience. After leaving his busy 9 to 5 at UF, Shontae can be found on Main Street at the Actors'Warehouse volunteering his theater knowledge and skills to provide support to this grassroots organization. Shontae not only directs, but uses in expertise in technical theater to design sets and lighting, assists with marketing and any other tasks that are needed.

Through Shontae's efforts the quality of the theater productions has continued to escalate. This helps to spread a positive light on the arts throughout the community. With cutbacks in the arts we have to continue to find ways of building a community, a world of people who will support theater and other art forms. Shontae helps to bring this to life, so new audiences become part of this cultural expereince. They spread the word, the arts will grow and remain alive.

His willingness to help is not limited. He has donated his time and talents at the ART and Gainesville Community Playhouse, but most of his countless hours has been working with the programs and performances at the Actors' Warehouse, home of the Star Center Children's Theatre and Spirit of Soul Repertory Company. It is easy to give accolades to those in front of the camera or onstage, but there are those in the background who really make it happen.

Through Shontae's work ethic and passion for the arts, the Actors' Warehouse has flourished. Patrons enjoy quality performances, youth and families become involved and learn the technical aspects of theater in a non-threatening environment. My belief is that people are placed where they are needed the most. With his degree and expereince, Shontae could work or even volunteer with a theater group with more resources, but he chooses to give where his work would benefit a true community minded organization. He is a very active member /officer of the graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Also member of the National Association of Professionals in Higher Education. Mr. White is truly a role model and mentor . Yes, there are lots of civic minded, high profile well deserving nominees, but none as deserving as Shontae K. White.
