A 30-year-old man was killed and a woman seriously injured early Thursday morning in Putnam County when they were struck by an Amtrak train, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Shortly after 7 a.m., the southbound train was approaching U.S. 17 and County Road 309 when operator Daniel Lopez, 44, of Lake Mary saw what appeared to be debris on the railroad, the FHP reported.
Lopez told troopers he saw two people lying on the railroad tracks and he blew the horn and applied the train’s brakes.
Stephen Carl Smith, 30, of San Mateo and Amanda Harvey, 32, of East Palatka tried to get up, Lopez said, but it was too late.
The cow catcher on the front of the train struck Smith, who was fatally injured. Harvey was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital where she was being treated for serious injuries, according to the FHP.
