Florida tailback Matt Jones practiced in full pads Tuesday and will go through pre-game warmups before Saturday's opener, but he will not play against Toledo, Florida coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday.

Jones missed all of preseason camp recovering from a viral infection. After having blood work done again Tuesday, Jones was cleared to practice for the first time Tuesday.

“Matt was in pads yesterday and ran around a good bit,” Muschamp said on the SEC coaches' teleconference. “We tried to bang him around a little bit. I think he's a little sore.

“The same status as far as playing next week. He won't be available Saturday. We'll probably take him through pre-game to put him out there in the heat and let him run around a little bit and continue to acclimate his body.”

Muschamp said Monday that Jones is on target to play against Miami next week.

With Jones out Saturday, Mack Brown will make his first start at tailback. Four other tailbacks — Mark Herndon, Valdez Showers, Kelvin Taylor and Adam Lane — also could get carries against the Rockets.
