The stabbing of a man Thursday in Interlachen led to the arrest of a suspect on charges of attempted murder and burglary, reported the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Jerry Hibbard, 69, was arrested at a home at 127 Lake Louise Circle after deputies were called regarding a possible armed disturbance, according to a sheriff’s press release.
A woman at the door told deputies that Hibbard was trying to kill her father-in-law, Joseph Leonard, in the bathroom with a knife.
Deputies went inside and immediately heard an altercation. Once at the bathroom door, deputies observed Hibbard standing over Leonard with a large butcher knife and a wooden cane.
The release states that deputies saw Hibbard attempting to stab Leonard with the knife and trying to choke him with a hand around his neck.
Deputies ordered Hibbard to drop the knife but he failed to comply. When deputies again ordered him to drop the knife, Hibbard relaxed his grip and Leonard grabbed the knife from him and attempted to stab Hibbard.
According to the report, the bathroom walls and floor were covered in blood as a result of the struggle.
Deputies said they learned that Hibbard entered the home without permission and confronted Leonard. The cause of the confrontation is unknown but there was some indication of longstanding animosity between the two men, the release states.
