A man taken into custody Thursday night after an hours-long standoff with police has been charged with aggravated child abuse.

Damon McGee, 34, is suspected of abusing the 4-year-old child of his girlfriend, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

McGee barricaded himself in a house in the 1300 block of Northwest Eighth Street for several hours Thursday evening before surrendering.

The incident started at about 4:40 p.m. when UF Health Shands Hospital called police to report suspicious injuries to a child. Police spoke with the child’s mother a short time later and then went to the home.

Police said McGee is involved with the child’s mother but is not the father of the child.

McGee was washing his car when police arrived about 5:45 p.m. He ran into the house and would not come out. Lt. Bruce Giles said at the scene Thursday night that no one else was in the house and the man was not threatening anyone.

“He wasn’t responsive. We tried the loudspeaker, and we tried to make contact with him on the phone,” Giles said. “We eventually made contact with him on the cellphone.”

McGee surrendered about 8:45 p.m. and was taken to the station for questioning. He was later charged with aggravated child abuse.
