An 83-year-old woman who was lost in Gainesville and looking for how to get home to Keystone Heights was killed Wednesday when her car was struck by a tractor-trailer.

Ruth M. Johnson had stopped her 2009 Toyota Corolla on the north shoulder of State Road 222 at State Road 26 around noon and was trying to flag down traffic because she was lost, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A witness told the FHP that he had given Johnson directions and that as she made a U-turn, she turned into the path of a 2009 Mack tractor-trailer driven by Victor J. Lucianno, 38, Brooksville, that was headed west on SR 26.

Lucianno swerved to the left to try to avoid the crash, the FHP reported, but his truck crashed into the driver’s side door, pushing the car onto the south shoulder of SR 222.

Johnson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
