The celebration, now in its second year, will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Eastside Recreation Center at 2841 E. University Ave.
Nate Courtney, senior librarian at Cone Park, said three- to four-person teams are needed to participate in the Double Dutch jump rope competition, with prizes for first, second and third places. The registration deadline is Wednesday. To register call 352-334-0720.
Courtney said jumping rope is fun and good exercise.
"We want to get the kids involved in something to do to remain active and to get them out of the house and outside exercising," Courtney said.
Heather Sostrom, Cone Park library manager, said everyone is invited to come and celebrate the end of summer and the excitement of a new school year with music provided by Atm Too Supreme Djs of Gainesville, "a build-your-own ice cream sundae bar," free books, face painting and other activities. Tickets for one free sundae will be available at the library booth, where children can get free books and school supplies.
"Each person can create a sundae," said Sostrom. "We will have vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream and toppings, so they can make their sundaes as delicious as they like."
Sostrom said last year about 100 people attended the event. This year, there will be more activities and more people are expected to attend. She said parents will have an opportunity to receive safety tips and information about local resources while their children are entertained.
The following local agencies will be on hand to offer information for parents and small toys and activities for children. They are: The Gainesville Police Department, Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, Early Learning Coalition of Alachua County, Partnership for Strong Families, SNAP/Bread of the Mighty Food Bank, CDS Family and Behavioral Health Services Inc., and the University of Florida HealthStreet.
Below is a schedule of events:
* 11 a.m-1 p.m.: Atm Too Supreme Djs, face painting, children's activities and information booths.
* 11:30 a.m.: Ice cream sundae bar opens.
* Noon: Magic Mike.
* 12:30 p.m.: Double-Dutch competition.
"It's an opportunity to meet your neighbors and enjoy the last weekend of the summer with ice cream sundaes," said Sostrom.
