The school year is almost here. Do you know your child's teacher?
Meet Your Teacher and school orientation programs for Alachua County Public Schools begin Thursday and continue Friday.
Each year, all county public schools and centers set aside time for students and families to visit campuses and get acquainted with teachers and academic programs.
Although elementary schools typically have the best turnout for Meet Your Teacher programs, Donna Jones, director of secondary curriculum for Alachua County Schools, said it's still relevant for the families of older students.
"It's still important for parents to be involved in their children's education," she said. "Although the children are getting older, they still need their parents to be well-informed about their expectations and the requirements for middle school and high school."
Parents of middle and high schoolers should remain informed and maintain an active role in keeping children interested in school and excited about learning, she said.
Meet Your Teacher programs on Thursday are for prekindergarten only at Hidden Oak Elementary School; all students at Howard Bishop, Fort Clarke, Lincoln, Oak View and Westwood middle schools; Horizon Center; Hawthorne Middle/High School and Gainesville High School; ninth-grade and new students at Buchholz and Newberry high schools; and the Professional Academies Magnet at Loften High School.
Friday programs are for first- through fifth-grade students at Hidden Oak Elementary and all students at every other public elementary school; Kanapaha and Mebane middle schools; Sidney Lanier and A. Quinn Jones centers; ninth-grade students at Eastside High School; and ninth-grade and new students at Santa Fe High School.
A list of all scheduled Meet Your Teacher and orientation dates and times can be found at www.sbac.edu under the "Back to School 2013" link.
Also under the link is a schedule of open house dates, which begin in the first week of September and offer a chance for families to hear more details about the curriculum for the year.
