An 83-year-old Keystone Heights woman died late Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of State Roads 26 and 222, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ruth M. Johnson had stopped her 2009 Toyota Corolla on the north shoulder of State Road 222 around 11:55 a.m. Wednesday at the point east of the Gainesville Regional Airport where 222 intersects with State Road 26, FHP said, adding that Johnson had left her vehicle and apparently was attempting to flag down motorists because she was lost.

Meantime, a 2000 Mack semi tractor-trailer heading west and driven by 38-year-old Victor J. Lucianno, of Brooksville, was on State Road 26 approaching State Road 222,

A witness to the crash said Lucianno had stopped his semi and had given Johnson directions to Keystone Heights. Johnson then maneuvered her Corolla for a U-turn, but turned directly into the path of Lucianno’s semi, which slammed into the driver’s door of Johnson’s Corolla, FHP said. Johnson was not wearing a seat belt, troopers added.

Johnson was declared dead at the scene, FHP said.
