An argument over the television turned violent Sunday when, police say, a Gainesville man grabbed a woman by the hair and repeatedly smashed her head against the wall after she threatened to change the channel.

The man, Roosevelt Franklin, 52, of 5905 NW 23rd Terrace, Apt. 3, has at least five prior violent convictions in Alachua County, including battery, domestic battery and battery/child abuse, the Gainesville Police Department reported.

The victim, who was left with bruises to both her right eye and forehead, along with an unexplained laceration on her left leg, told police Franklin had battered her multiple times in the past, police reported.

Franklin was arrested on charges of felony battery as well as resisting arrest without violence after police said he resisted efforts to handcuff him.

He told police that the argument began when the victim and another woman disturbed him as he was watching TV. He denied that the argument turned physical and said the victim’s injuries were likely the result of an earlier fall.

Franklin was booked into the Alachua County jail, where he remained Monday in lieu of $50,000 bond.
