A suspect was arrested late Saturday afternoon for the death of a Gilchrist County woman on July 24, authorities said.
Michael Darnell Porter, 53, was charged with homicide and home invasion, according to Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Manning.
Joyce Burrow, 55, was found lying in the road in Bell after being struck by a car. Her dying words, authorities said, were that she was escaping an intruder in her house.
Neighbors later told investigators that they had heard a vehicle driving away from the house at 3500 NW 25th Circle, according to a sheriff’s report.
They called 911 and stayed with Burrow until Gilchrist County Fire Rescue and deputies arrived.
Burrow was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital, where she was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries, according to the report.
Manning said authorities are still trying to determine whether any relationship existed between Porter and Burrow. Manning said Porter has lived in various places, including Levy County.
The sheriff’s department, investigating the case with other agencies, identified Porter as a suspect and arrested him about 5 p.m. when he reentered Florida after he had been traveling to Alabama and Mississippi, Manning said.
