Diane Hooten McFarlin has always had a plan for her life. And it has always revolved around journalism.
Perhaps that’s why she has proven so successful as executive editor of two newspapers, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and The Gainesville Sun, and as publisher of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
She has led newsrooms in rapidly changing times that have seen print circulation decline, along with an increasing emphasis on new ways to deliver content, whether it be through the Internet, social media or beyond. Those who gather and report the news today must be able to frame a story through words and pictures, in print, on television and on the Web. Where and how we get our news will no doubt continue to evolve.
How best to train the next generation of journalists?
In an industry facing questions about its future, 59-year-old McFarlin wants the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications to be part of the answer. When she took the position as the college’s sixth dean on January 1, she returned to Gainesville with a plan.
