Michael Barnett already received an offer from Florida, so he said the plan at this year's Friday Night Lights was just to have some fun.
Joining 300 other campers in Florida's biggest summer recruiting event last Friday, the 6-foot-4, 247-pound Barnett said before the event he was just there to get in some time in front of UF coaches and showcase his abilities.
“It's football, you just got to love the game,” he said.
Barnett, a 2015 recruit from Ridgeville (S.C.) Woodland High School, said he received the Gators' offer during his last visit on Father's Day weekend. Barnett said he met with UF coach Will Muschamp and both came away impressed.
“(We) talked about how much he liked me, how much he liked my film and stuff like that. It was pretty cool,” Barnett said.
Florida is among five schools competing for Barnett. Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina State have all made offers for the four-star defensive end.
In fact, Barnett said he's still on tour. He recently visited Florida State, and was in Auburn last week for another camp.
Saying he “really liked them,” Barnett was in Blacksburg for Virginia Tech's spring game. Barnett added that he is still planning a visit to N.C. State and is attending the Clemson-Georgia game in August.
Though Virginia Tech is considered to be the favorite, Barnett said the distance from home is not a large factor in his decision on which school he'll be attending.
“It doesn't really play a factor at all,” he said. “It's fine to me. It really doesn't matter, as long as I'm playing football, how far away it is.”
But Barnett said he'd enjoy the experience of playing in The Swamp if he picks Florida.
“I really like it,” he said. “I can definitely see myself playing in The Swamp, playing against everybody. It's pretty cool.”
