LARGO, Fla. — A Pinellas County detention deputy was fired for grabbing an inmate by the neck and pinning him to the ground inside the jail earlier this year.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Monday that deputy Richard Stotts was fired.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that on May 8, Stotts was working in the booking area of the jail when a handcuffed David Alan Koons arrived after being arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, battery on an officer and resisting an officer.

Koons yelled profanities and racial slurs toward jail staff. Officials say that's when Stotts smacked Koons, wrapped his right arm around his head and pinned him to the ground.

Stotts, a 12-year sheriff's office employee, later told investigators he overreacted and lost his temper.
