A Gainesville man was arrested Monday night on a child abuse charge after multiple police officers responded to a call about a loud disturbance from inside a house.
Detron McCray, 33, was at a house in the 700 block of Northeast 20th Street just before 11 p.m. when Gainesville police arrived. A neighbor said it sounded as if a child was being beaten inside, according to a report.
The victim told police that McCray had meted out the discipline, 20 hits on the buttocks with a belt, for being disrespectful, the report said.
The victim had a large welt on the right side of the face that appeared fresh. The victim first told police it came from a fall then later said it came from a slap by McCray.
The victim's age, gender and relationship to McCray were redacted from the report.
McCray denied striking the victim. He was arrested on a felony charge of child abuse and was being held Tuesday at the Alachua County jail without bond.
