Five juveniles were arrested early Friday morning on grand theft auto charges after allegedly attempting to steal scooters by putting them over a fence.
Police responded to a call late Thursday about several juveniles acting suspicious in the parking lot at University House Apartments on Northwest 13th Street, according to a report by Gainesville Police Department spokesman Officer Ben Tobias.
A Gainesville police officer arrived at the apartment complex not long after midnight and saw scooters had been placed over a fence, Tobias told The Sun. The officer found five suspects in the 700 block of Northwest Eighth Street, one of whom he was able to detain while the other four fled.
Another officer caught one of the boys after chasing him on foot, while yet another officer with his K-9 companion tracked the remaining three suspects.
The suspects attempted to steal three scooters by getting them over the fence into the field of the adjacent A. Quinn Jones Center, according to reports.
When they were brought in for questioning, the boys implicated each other and were all arrested on charges of grand theft auto, a third-degree felony, Tobias said. They were taken to a juvenile detention facility.
