The man arrested in 2012 on accusations he had raped a jogger four years earlier in Haile Plantation has additionally been charged with felony battery after allegedly punching another inmate at the Alachua County jail.
Andrew Payne Jr., 39, is at the jail awaiting trial, currently scheduled for October, on the sexual assault charge. On Wednesday, he and another inmate were sitting next to each other when Payne spontaneously punched the other inmate in the face with a closed fist, the jail reported, leaving the other inmate with a swollen right eye.
The other inmate said he wanted to press charges, the jail reported. Payne was charged with battery by a jail detainee.
Payne has remained jailed since his July 19, 2012, arrest, with his bond set at $1 million. He was arrested in Georgia after DNA evidence linked him to the brutal attack on May 21, 2008, which left the woman seriously injured and shocked the community.
Payne has a lengthy criminal record, including 16 felony charges with four convictions and 12 misdemeanor charges with six convictions.
