An Alachua County jury on Thursday convicted a man of capital sexual battery in a case involving a child.

The jury sentenced Richard W. Heagney, 58, to life in prison following the conviction, said State Attorney's Office spokesman Darry Lloyd.

Heagney is the latest of several men convicted of sexual crimes involving children in the past two weeks.

Heagney was arrested based on an Alachua County Sheriff's Office investigation in October 2011. The investigation alleged that Heagney sexually battered a young child under the age of 12 years old.

Lloyd said the jury in the two-day trial deliberated for 1 hours before returning the guilty verdict.
