A 70-year-old man bitten by a rattlesnake in Putnam County was flown by helicopter to UF Health Shands Hospital Saturday afternoon.
The man was being driven or was trying to drive himself to the hospital in Gainesville when Alachua County Fire Rescue got a call about 3:30 p.m. that the man was in Melrose.
ACFR District Chief Joe Cox said the man was picked up by the helicopter at Melrose Elementary School on State Road 26. Cox said that ACFR gave the man medical attention until the helicopter arrived but added he didn't know the man's condition.
At least three people, including two boys, have been treated at Shands for rattlesnake bites in Shands in recent weeks in addition to the man bitten Saturday.
