A man who authorities have not identified was found inside a burning truck on Southwest Cypress Lake Road in Lake City early Thursday morning.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 4 a.m. the morning of July 4, deputies and firefighters from the Columbia County Fire Department responded to investigate a Chevrolet pickup that had been reported on fire. Once the fire had been extinguished, firefighters discovered a male driver, the truck's only occupant, dead in the vehicle, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.
Detectives from the Sheriff's Office and the Florida State Fire Marshal's Office are jointly investigating the case, but authorities said there is no evidence of a vehicle crash or indications of foul play, the statement said.
Late Friday afternoon, the death was being investigated as accidental, according to the Sheriff's Office. The name of the dead man is not being released pending identification by the Medical Examiner's Office in Jacksonville, authorities said.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement crime scene technicians assisted the Columbia Sheriff's Office in collecting potential evidence. An autopsy of the dead man was scheduled for Friday, but autopsy results and cause of death had not been released by Friday evening.
