A pet was killed, a firefighter slightly injured and a Starke home destroyed in a blaze early Friday morning, Bradford County Emergency Management reported.

The cause of the fire at 2042 E State Road 230 is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal's Office, Michael Heeder added in a press release from the office.

A passer-by reported flames coming from the roof of the home about 4:30 a.m. and called 911. Firefighters from the Starke, Lawtey and Theressa fire departments responded and brought the fire under control within 30 minutes.

Nobody was in the home, and a family member who lived nearby said the residents were out of the area, Heeder said.

The body of a dog was reportedly found inside the home after the fire had been extinguished, and at least one other pet was missing. Heeder said.

A Lawtey firefighter was slightly injured by broken glass and was treated at the scene by paramedics before returning to work the fire. No other injuries were reported, Heeder said.

The fire remains under investigation, a standard procedure for any fire where the cause is not immediately and obviously determined, Heeder added.
