A 20-year-old Gainesville man has been charged with kidnapping for ransom after police say he held a woman hostage, demanding money for a debt and threatening to kill her and her child.
For three days, Maurice Deshawn McQueen, who goes by the street name “Reece,” stayed in a motel room on Northwest 13th Street, which was paid for by the victim, according to a Gainesville Police Department report. He called her on her cell phone while she was at her father’s home and demanded she come to the motel.
McQueen threatened to travel to her father’s home to collect the money if the victim did not go to the motel, according to the report. The victim got a ride to the motel and, upon her arrival, McQueen is accused of locking her in the room and, standing directly in front of the door, daring her “now try to get out.”
McQueen also told the victim he knew where her son went to day care and called it by name, threatening to shoot her and her son if she called the police, the report states. During the standoff, McQueen is accused of breaking glasses that were on the victim’s head, picking up a chair and acting as if he was going to strike her with it.
After an hour and a half, the victim told McQueen she had access to her father’s debit card and could retrieve $250 from an ATM to give him. The report says he agreed to that.
When the woman left the room, she immediately called 911. Gainesville police arrested McQueen without incident and took him to the Alachua County jail, where he is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.
